Leaner, Smarter, Stronger: Your 2027 Benefits Game Plan

Every November, our team sits across the table from business owners holding a renewal letter. This year the numbers are real. Small-group insurers proposed a median increase of 14% for 2027, the second double-digit year in a row.

But what we’re hearing in those meetings doesn’t make the headlines. Owners aren’t retreating. They’re retooling. And at CorpStrat, we’re genuinely optimistic about where that leads.

Businesses are connecting their technology

Across our clients, companies are working hard to get payroll, HR, timekeeping and benefits enrollment talking to each other. When those systems connect, good things happen fast. Eligibility errors drop. New hires enroll on their phones in minutes. Owners finally see what each benefit costs per employee, in one place. That visibility is worth real money. You can’t manage what you can’t see, and for years most small businesses were flying blind.

Outsourcing is a strategy, not a retreat

Many owners are outsourcing roles like bookkeeping, IT, customer support and back-office admin to specialized firms or offshore. That’s a smart lever for controlling benefit costs, because a leaner core team means a more focused plan.

Here’s the part we always stress: the people you keep become the heart of the business. They’re the ones you can’t afford to lose. Benefits are one of the clearest ways to tell them that. Delicate balance.

So, what about AI?

We’re curious, and we’re keeping a balanced view. AI is already us do our jobs better, helping carriers quote faster, flagging unusual claims, and answering employee questions at 10 p.m. when HR has gone home. Those are real wins.

At the same time, AI is a tool, not a strategy. Hospitals and billing offices are using it too, so someone still needs to watch the numbers and ask the hard questions. Our team will keep testing what works and pass along what’s worth your attention.

Help is on the horizon

Two trends give us a lot of hope. First, alternatives to the traditional insurance market keep maturing: level-funded plans, expanding use of pre tax plans like HSA’s and HRAs, direct primary care and more transparent pharmacy programs. Not every option fits every group, but owners have more choices than they did five years ago.

Second, fairer markets are starting to pressure prescription prices. New Medicare negotiated prices, GoodRX, Mark Cuban Drugs, and Amazon RX on several widely used drugs take effect in January, and price transparency is spreading. Drug costs are one of the biggest drivers of your premium, so any downward pressure is good news for employers.

Your 2027 game plan

While those alternatives develop, here’s what we’re recommending to clients now:

  1. Take inventory. List every benefit you offer and what it costs you per employee.
  2. Communicate it. Most employees underestimate what their benefits are worth. A simple total compensation statement can change how they see their job.
  3. Reinforce, don’t rip out. Small changes to contributions or plan options, plus low-cost voluntary benefits, often beat a full overhaul.
  4. Use the technology you already pay for. Your payroll and enrollment portal can likely do more than you think. Promote Promote Promote
  5. Stay ready. Revisit alternatives mid-year, so you’re positioned well before your next renewal.

The bottom line

Rising costs are a challenge, but they’re not the whole story. Businesses are getting leaner, smarter and better connected. Employees who understand their benefits value them more. And the market is slowly moving toward more choice and fairer pricing.

That’s a good setup for 2027. If you’d like a fresh look at your plan and how you’re communicating it to your employees, give our team a call. We’d love to help.
